Pulled me out of a deep low
Fired me up to the heights
Dragged me out of my darkness
I was drunk on delights
You turned me from a fool into a clown
You lifted me up
Now put me back down
Had to show me what love is
Couldn’t find my own way
If you don’t see me happy
It’s because I can’t stay
You turned me from a fool into a clown
You lifted me up
Now put me back down
I can’t compare with all the things that you do
I don’t have enough love
To give back to you
You turned me from a fool into a clown
You lifted me up
Now put me back down
So you gotta let me go now
Let me fall back to the ground
There are plenty more waiting
For your love to come round
You turned me from a fool into a clown
You lifted me up
Now put me back down

Folks pass here most days, they don’t stay long
On the move, got too much on
Worn out like some beast of burden
Need no drink to ease their hurried minds
Take some time, they would find
Answer’s there if they could hear when
Sister Mahalia and Mavis Staples sing
‘Precious Lord, Take my Hand’ for Dr King
I pass by here, stay a while most days
Hear more than I care to say
And every word is something broken
Their pain leaves some heartbreak everywhere
But I know that I can bear it
I am strong because I hear when
Sister Mahalia and Mavis Staples sing
‘Precious Lord, Take my Hand’ for Dr King
Sit with me and pass an hour today
We can share some cheery tales
We can share some teary moments
These are times we’ll think of fond and true
I will be a friend to you
I promise this because I hear when
Sister Mahalia and Mavis Staples sing
‘Precious Lord, Take my Hand’ for Dr King

It’s all changed
Since I was on this road [from Ulgham riding west to Haugh of Urr]
Light fading
These days are growing cold [from Ulgham riding west to Haugh of Urr]
The wind brings
A warning in the air [from Ulgham riding west to Haugh of Urr]
There could be
Some tough times up ahead [from Ulgham riding west to Haugh of Urr]
We were once
So close we were as one [from Ulgham riding west to Haugh of Urr]
I stayed out
Thought I was having fun [from Ulgham riding west to Haugh of Urr]
She left, said
See you when you’re a man [from Ulgham riding west to Haugh of Urr]
It’s taken
This long to understand [from Ulgham riding west to Haugh of Urr]
Now I feel ashamed
Why I take this pain
Hundred miles apart
Punishing my heart
Making up is tough
If I hurt enough
Will she take me back
Or will she just send me packing
Now I’m getting near
What if she’s not in?
If I can’t see her
Long way home again
Leave a sorry note
I’ll be back one day
But next time I’ll know
Find the easy way
I’ll tell her
That I’m a wiser guy [from Ulgham riding west to Haugh of Urr]
I’ll say that
I’m really gonna try [from Ulgham riding west to Haugh of Urr]
If she can
Forget what’s in the past [from Ulgham riding west to Haugh of Urr]
She’ll find out
I’m worth a second chance [from Ulgham riding west to Haugh of Urr]

Ask me why I am so quiet
I am not going to lie to you
Days I didn’t think we would get through
Don’t know where we should turn first
We have seen the best and worst of us
Hope there’s someone watching over you
Chorus
Look at you, oh love of mine,
Dressed up in your finery
Let’s step outside and have ourselves a time
Put a smile upon our faces
Raise some cheer in this old place
Keep in our thoughts the friends we leave behind
Find the words
They should come easy
Can’t believe what I’ve been seeing
Never thought all this would come to be
So long since we had a laugh
We’ve a lot to catch up after this
Take my hand I need you here with me
Chorus
Talk of now and
Talk of when
Tell me over and again
There’s nothing so small it isn’t true
Simple things we took for granted
Now we see they’re so important
Love your friends and keep them near to you
Chorus

I Am Not a Surfer
02:59
|
|
||
I wanna see a big wave
I mean a really big wave
A wave the size of a house
See the surfer tiny as a
Speck on the ocean
I’m gonna have to fly there
We don’t get waves like that here
In our tiny seats we’re
Looking at the baby waves
Working up some trouble down below
I am not a surfer
But it’s something I want to work up to
Watch them surf the barrel
Potential to be fatal
Sea gets temperamental
When a wave is monumental…
And frankly quite scary
I am not a surfer
But it’s something I plan to work up to
Hang out on the beach
Maybe I can find someone to teach me
Not asking for it free
I can help out with a wipeout
It’s something you’ve got to work up to

No Man
03:02
|
|
||
You know it ain’t so rare to find
Six bullet holes in all the signs
But that place was the kind you felt
They’s taking aim at something else
And maybe someone just got lucky that day
He was a prince the way he dressed
She was no damsel in distress
Shot her Pa, he went too far
Threw out his wife, she took his part
Fond of that gun, by the way
Chorus
Be wrong to think of her unkind
Or weak in some way in her mind
No man ever tret her well
Or thought more of her than hisself
She said ‘We’re now a family’
He said ‘That’s not my destiny’
Figured he would leave her so
She gutted him from knee to nose
Sharpest blade you ever saw, they say
Sheriff waved his gun around
Said ‘I’m takin you downtown’
That was the last they saw of him
She dug some hole and filled it in
And you won’t find it, come what may
Judge he said ‘You’re bound for hell
If it’s true what I have heard tell’
Twelve men said it was all lies
When she looked each one in the eye
Missed a step that night, they left him where he lay
Now she preaches every week
Church full of the mild and meek
It is a sin to take a life
But blessed be your gun and knife
And all the brothers and sisters, they say ‘Amen’

Affliction’s bitter cup is past
Life’s chequered scene is o’er
With Jesus now they calmly rest
Til time shall be no more
For every fortune there’s a coin
That finds a path into a hand
And bears a weight to bring him down
So greed makes its demand
For every reputation made
A rich man will a favour grant
And when the debt falls to be paid
Then honour shall be spent
For every man who finds a love
There is another who will hate
And take from those with hearts that give
To prosper by their fate
For every lady fine and fair
Who loves upon a feather bed
A blow will fall, the belt unspared
To drink the man is wed
For every sermon spoken well
And every prayer implored
Hear now the tolling of the bell
That by the dead unheard
Affliction’s bitter cup is past
Life’s chequered scene is o’er
With Jesus now they calmly rest
Til time shall be no more

What, me?
03:29
|
|
||
There will come a moment when
You can kick me out and then
We can both agree that we are done
Handing me my coat and hat
You say now that’s where we’re at
But I think it’s you jumping the gun
Right now
Is not the time to settle scores
Just wait
Cos I know you will have second thoughts
It’s true
Maybe we’ve been here once or twice
You know
Don’t say I’m wrong now, that won’t make it right
So I have a drink or two
I always come back home to you
Nearly always, most times if not some
And so what if I take some cash
If any’s left I put it back
So I’d say it’s you jumping the gun
Get this in your head and we can go and have a laugh
The way to find enlightenment is down a tempting path
Never mind whatever’s out there hanging round for you
It’ll still be there when you eventually come to
Here’s your last chance, let me speak
Bring my bag in off the street
If there’s a time to talk then this one
Think how boring life can be
With people more like you than me
Can’t you see it’s you jumping the gun

Put your drink down
Come outside with me
There is something I want you to see
Warm my face with your sweet breath
Hold me close beneath a Tyneside sunset
Friday nights we
Tell a week of tales
Fill our glasses, laugh at all our fails
These are friends beside us every step
Walking home beneath a Tyneside sunset
Sit yourself beside me
Hold my hand and tell me
How you feel about me
I just want to hear you say
That you see what I see
That you feel what I feel
That you need what I need
That you’re never far away
Ruby river
Drifting glassy cold
Quiet window jewels, grey and gold
Here’s a picture that we won’t forget
You with me beneath a Tyneside sunset
Let’s stay out
Until the colours dim
And the quiet of the night comes in
Here and now is where I’m happiest
Loving you beneath a Tyneside sunset

Neat Side
04:09
|
|
||
She’s got a neat side
On the upside
Got a bright side
She’s got a neat side
On the down side
Got a blind side
I would trade the bottle for a bike
But there’s no deal that she would like
[she’s got a neat side]
She’s got a neat side
Not the wrong side
Not that I tried
She’s got a neat side
Kinda aimed wide
And so I lied
I can play it true or I can fake
There is no deal that she will take
Painting you a picture
Comes in black and blue
You can put your colours in
Where you think they suit
I can promise if I must
But there’s no deal that she will trust
[she’s got a neat side]
She’s got a neat side
Keep her onside
Swallow my pride
She’s got a neat side
On the upside
Sorta kind-eyed
I could give her up or I could fight
There is no deal that makes it right
Painting you a picture
Comes in black and white
You can make it colourful
If you think it’s right
